Watch this video to learn more about the differences between pin and pinless moisture meters. This video will help you decide which moisture meter will be more suited for your needs. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Pin Moisture Meters measure the electrical resistance between two pins. If moisture varies within the small measuring area, the highest value is indicated. Pinless Moisture Meters use electro-magnetic wave technology, which measures density in a three-dimensional field underneath the instrument. If moisture varies within the segment, the average moisture content is indicated.
All pin moisture meters from Lignomat indicate a wood moisture content in percent. The advantage of the pin meter is versatility. All thicknesses from veneer to logs can be measured with a wide moisture range from wet to dry. If you are concerned about measuring depth, add an electrode. Monitoring in-kiln or with extension cables in hard-to-reach places is only possible in pin mode with pins, screws or probes available up to 7″ long.
All pinless moisture meters from Lignomat indicate wood moisture in percent. The advantage is that a large number of boards can be measured in a short time without leaving pin holes. However, pinless moisture meters cannot measure moisture in round or oddly shaped pieces.
Pinless moisture meters from Lignomat can measure lower moisture content than pin moisture meter. Great for checking wood products and floors exposed to low relative humidity.
Your best choice would be to buy a pin and pinless combination moisture meter, the Ligno-VersaTec. You can scan quickly in pinless mode and measure deeper to investigate in pin mode. Even relative humidity can be measured. However, there are many applications where only a pin or pinless moisture meter can do the job.
